Your taxes

My Tax Receipt

Where federal taxes went in fiscal year 2025 (October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025), agency by agency and program by program.

The rule. Your share of each line is your taxes times that line's share of total federal outlays for the year.

Outlays were larger than receipts, so the part paid by borrowing is its own line, apart from your taxes. Dividing by receipts instead would overstate the bill.

Your numbers

Turn on JavaScript in your browser to work out your own receipt. Below is the receipt for an example of $10,000 in federal taxes.

Example: $10,000 in federal taxes

Your share, by this rule

Spent across every line below$10,000.00
Borrowed share, shown apart$2,532.62Not part of your taxes and not in the lines below.

In fiscal year 2025, the federal government spent $7.01 trillion and took in $5.23 trillion. The gap, $1.78 trillion, was borrowed: 25.3 percent of outlays. By the same rule, the borrowed share is your taxes times the gap divided by outlays.

Award dollars are what agencies obligated in contracts, grants, loans and other awards during the fiscal year, as USAspending reports them. They are a different measure from Treasury's outlays, so no share of your taxes is worked out for a recipient.

Choose where the open share goes Planned

A vote on the open share, one vote per account, is planned. It is not built yet.

How this is worked out

The rules we use
  • Your share of each line is your taxes times that line's share of total federal outlays for the year.
  • Outlays were larger than receipts, so the part paid by borrowing is its own line, apart from your taxes. Dividing by receipts instead would overstate the bill.
  • An agency is a line of Treasury's Table 5 at the first level. Its outlays are its own line headed "Total--" in the same table.
  • A program is a line one level below an agency, as Treasury prints it. A program that is a heading has the amount of its own "Total--" line, or, when it has none, the sum of the lines under it. A line with its own amount and lines printed under it counts both.
  • Lines that subtract money the agency collects (such as "Proprietary Receipts from the Public" and "Intrabudgetary Transactions") are kept as printed, as negative amounts.
  • The agencies add up to Treasury's "Total Outlays" line, and each agency's programs add up to its "Total--" line, to the cent. A list that does not add up is not shown.
  • The fixed share is the column "Mandatory and Net Interest" of the Office of Management and Budget's Table 8.1: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, other mandatory spending, offsetting receipts and net interest. The open share is the column "Discretionary", the spending Congress sets each year in appropriations laws.
  • Each part's share is its amount divided by the table's "Total Outlays" for the same year. A year the table marks as an estimate is not used.
  • The table's own parts add up to its totals within 0.3 billion dollars (it rounds each amount to 0.1 billion). A year that does not add up is not used.
